Hey, what's this site all about?
Hi! As DJ Colicky Boy, I produce dance music mixes to brighten otherwise dreary days and add more pep to already-great days. I'm passionate about taking great dance music and creating something beautifully new with it. Most mixes are for sale, though some are free (more on that later). Read on to find out why I do what I do.
Isn't having a lot of individual dance songs good enough?
The problem with a playlist of individual dance tracks is that each song fades out and ends after 3-7 minutes; then you have to wait for the next song to start up again.
It's like driving on regular streets: your car goes for a block or two, then stops at the next stop light. Stop and go. Stop and go. Rhythm constantly interrupted. No continuity.
Interrupted rhythm is no fun in music either. Just when you start getting into the music...it ends! And a new song has to start up. And the cycle keeps repeating. Over. And over.
The solution to the problem of individual songs
DJ mixes take dance music to an entirely new level by keeping the music flowing nonstop. But there's more to it than that.
Good DJ mixes require good transitions.
Good transitions don't just flow one song into another; the transitions themselves generate a unique, memorable and distinctive sound that is found nowhere else except in the hands of a master DJ. Oftentimes, the transitions are more hotly anticipated among the dance floor crowd than the songs themselves. DJ mixes are for serious dance music fans.
Where to find good DJ mixes?
One problem is finding a good DJ online. Not every DJ makes smooth, delicious and arresting transitions. It's an art and you can tell when a transition just "doesn't sound good."
Some DJs don't understand the importance of insanely great transitions. Instead, the transitions are meh...or worse, downright bad!
Other DJs do make majestic transitions but their song selection is awful. Two minutes of wonderful transitions stuck in between 58 minutes of scowl-inducing music.
And then there are those DJs who do understand the importance of mesmerizing transitions...but are impossible to find online. For example, I love the 80s pop mixes by an obscure Chicago-area DJ named Brian Middleton. His transitions were fantastic, and his choice of songs were also great. But those mixes are nowhere to be found on the web.
So it's not easy to find a good DJ online, one who cares about both song selection and the art of the transition.
A second problem when seeking DJ mixes is that even if you find a good DJ online, those DJs don't make new mixes often enough.
Sure, you may find a great mix online. You'll likely want more by that same DJ, just as you would want more tunes by a favorite music artist. But most online DJs don't make mixes very often so listening to those same mixes over and over gets old fast. It's like watching a great Seinfeld episode over and over. It stops being funny.
Consistent production is a very real and significant problem for dance music lovers who want fresh, new mixes on a frequent basis. If you're going out for a run, do you want to listen to the same couple mixes over and over?
A third problem when seeking DJ mixes is variety...or the lack thereof.
Let's say you find a great DJ who respects both song selection and the need for beautiful transitions. And let's say this DJ also puts out a mix every month, or even better, every two weeks. (Armin van Buuren is an obvious example.) This would be great...if that style of dance music is the only one you like.
That's because nearly all DJs (including Armin van Buuren) only work with one genre of music. What that means to you is that even if you find an outstanding DJ who creates new mixes on a regular basis, you'll only be fed one style of music.
But if you're like many music fans, you don't always listen to the same style of music every time you turn on your iPod. Yesterday you felt like something retro...maybe old-school Madonna. But maybe today you feel like something really uptempo with hard-pounding drum lines. And other times you feel like synthpop by New Order or Depeche Mode. Tomorrow you might be feeling something more current, like Taylor Swift.
It's very common to like variety...even within dance music.
Yet, it is impossible to find (1) a good DJ (2) who consistently makes mixes (3) in different dance genres.
That's why I started this web site. I'm giving you something you won't find anywhere else.
Everything in one place
My web site provides you with consistently fresh, new DJ mixes in multiple different dance genres that either take you back in time to the old-school classics or introduce you to amazing new stuff, all kissed by smooth transitions.
Each month, I create new mixes in a variety of dance music genres.
No more listening to the same old, same old. Satisfy your fix with new mixes. With new song selections. And new transitions.
No more being stuck with just one type of mix. Don't feel like trance today? No problem. Here's a brand new flashback mix. Or a brand new contemporary pop (club) mix. Or whatever you're feeling that day.
No more wasted time searching all over the web for new mixes. Time is money. This is a one-stop shop. Download your mixes all from one site, sync to your mp3 player and get out and enjoy your life, instead of staying hunched over your computer, still looking, still looking, still looking...or resigning yourself to stop-and-go individual tunes.
You get quality mixes with thought put into each one. I won't do cheap tricks like play multiple songs by the same artist in the same mix (unless it's an artist megamix), because I don't think that requires much creativity.
Speaking of creativity, I'll also occasionally come up with unique mix projects, like the popular Music Thru The Decades series, where songs from different decades alternate in the mix. You won't find creative DJ mixes like that anywhere else.
Consistent freshness + multiple genres = 1 unique experience...and you only get it here from DJ Colicky Boy. No hunting. No wasting time.
Why do I have to pay? Why aren't the mixes free?
You might be thinking, "I can find some free mixes by spending a few hours searching the web. Why do I have to pay for mixes?"
Think of it this way. If you were to bill someone for your time, how much would you charge for your own services?
$25/hour? $50/hour? $100/hour?
Let's go with minimum wage, just for the sake of argument. The national average is $7.41 at the time of this writing.
Of course, you would never think your time is worth mere minimum wage, but let's run with this because it will show you more clearly why buying my mixes is worth every penny.
Say you spent one hour on the internet searching for free mixes and you found one free mix in that one hour.
If you are worth minimum wage, you just spent $7.41 for that one mix.
If you think you are worth $100/hour, you just spent $100 for that one mix.
Not to mention the fun things you didn't do because you did this instead (i.e., the opportunity cost of that hour spent searching for a free mix).
So that "free" mix that you found on the internet really wasn't free. At a minimum, it cost you $7.41, but you're worth more than minimum wage so it cost you closer to $100. And you only got one mix for that $100.
Furthermore, you may have no idea if that free mix is even any good. You'll download it and if it does turn out to be good, then it was worth $100 per hour. But if the mix sucks (crappy song selection, amateurish transitions, etc), then you just wasted $100 because you got nothing out of the hour you spent and you'll likely delete that crappy mix off your computer.
Additionally, you have to repeat the whole process every single time you're sick of that one free mix you found and you're wanting to hear something new again.
In contrast, the current premium membership fee for my site is $9.99 per month. This gives you access to all the mixes on the site plus all future mixes.
That's just $9.99 per month, not per hour! In exchange for your $9.99 per month, you get a minimum of two fresh, new mixes per month. With consistent quality.
And the only time you spend is to come directly to my site, click the download links to whichever mixes you're interested in, and you're done. Back on with life!
Finally, we all willingly pay for items we think are worth it. If you value a car, you'll buy it, not look for a free one. If you value a steak, you'll buy it, not look for a free one. Do you value mixes? If so, you'll know that it's worth it.
You get what you pay for.
I actually give free mixes myself.
What that means to you is that if you're wasting time looking for free mixes, save yourself the time because I'm giving free mixes right here.
Aside from saving you time, I'm also giving out free mixes to give you a taste of what the membership mixes are like. If you like what you hear, just know that there are a ton of membership mixes available. So again, if you value your time, you'll want to be a premium member and get access to all the mixes.
Simply subscribe for free site updates by email. When you sign up you'll get three bonus free mixes. And of course, when the occasional free mix is posted online, you'll be instantly notified.
